All sticks used in the process of making Walking Sticks on this website have been collected somewhere in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. My best friend and beautiful wife have had a hand in most of the collecting and finishing. All materials are collected from fallen or previously cut or fallen tree branches as much as possible.
We like collecting limbs that are found already on the ground in the woodlands for two reasons:
They are already somewhat dried.
It is a way of preserving a part of nature’s natural beauty.
We have great respect and love for nature and do not believe in taking the life of a tree to fill our needs.
- We look for branches 2″ to 3″ thick. They should have a trunk somewhere between 60″ and 70″ long. Their shapes may be Crooked, Twisted, or Straight. We found these criteria are the best for the overall “Artistic Look” that is in our finished products.
Each stick we collect is subject to our 12 step process:
Cut to a carriable length to fit in the mode of transportation
The moisture level is tested and dried to 10% upon arrival at our shop.
After drying, we trim-the-stick of any unwanted protrusions and cut and taper to the final length and shape.
The surface is sanded to a 220 grit finish
The artwork is drawn on the surface.
Carving is started and finished.
The surface is sanded to a 400 grit finish.
A minimum of three (3) coats of polyurethane are applied after paints or stains
The stick is then taken back to a wooded area to see how it feels and looks in its natural habitat.
It is christened a “Walking Stick” and ever to be called as such.
Only after these 10 steps, The “Walking Stick” is put up for sale on Ozark Arts & Crafts.
I like my walking sticks to be about shoulder height. Some folks like them shorter or taller. It is really personal preference.
Any dimension wanted between our min/max must be custom cut by the purchaser.
(We pass on a big saving, by NOT offering custom dimensions, to our customers)
This Wood Spirit Walking Stick can give you great flexibility on the trail. A Walking Stick can provide a better balance while walking uphill or downhill. The most important thing about owning a Root Cane is lowering the risk of falling.
